A Focus on Quality and
International Markets

August of 1994 also marked another important milestone in Red Dot's history: ISO 9001 registration. An integral part of the company's strategy for future growth, registration allows Red Dot to continue to supply domestic and overseas customers that are increasingly requiring that their suppliers be ISO 9001 registered. Registration also helps define Red Dot's own quality processes and standards, which are already having the affect of reducing waste and warranty claims.

The standard's emphasis on establishing maintaining quality standards went hand-in-hand with Red Dot's changeover to the "lean" manufacturing process, a customer-driven production philosophy which increases efficiency and quality while reducing waste.

In lean manufacturing, production is carefully coordinated to have parts ready for final assembly as they're needed, creating a "pull" through the manufacturing process rather than a "push." The method also uses much smaller batch sizes – often less than 100. At this level, quality increases because the worker's attention is more easily focused. Plant workers become their own inspectors and costly warehousing of both parts and finished product is significantly reduced. Since flow began to be implemented in 1995, warranty claims have dropped while on-time shipments have approached 100 percent.

While production was becoming streamlined in Seattle, Red Dot Europe was established in Marseilles, France in January 1996 to establish a stronger European presence for the company's growing roster of international OEM customers and European distributors.
